Breaking Vicious Cycles of Hunger & Conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
Microboard is involved in a groundbreaking and sustainable farming project in the troubled eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). For the past five years, Microboard has been supporting an innovative program aimed at reducing conflict, known as The Rebuilders, or Les Rebatisseurs in French. This program addresses the severe food insecurity in the region, as highlighted by the World Food Program (WFP):
- 5.4 million people in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces of the DRC need urgent food assistance.
- An estimated 23.4 million people across the DRC are facing crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity.
The Rebuilders, founded by James Byensi, are working on peace-building initiatives in a region plagued by violence, conflict, hunger, and displacement. Currently, 2.5 million people are displaced in Ituri Province, where The Rebuilders are active. Microboard, along with the company Napatech, has acquired farmland and equipment to enhance food security and provide jobs for those affected by the conflict.
- Two donated tractors will help refugees cultivate land to grow food for themselves and others in their camps.
- The first harvest will supply beans, potatoes, cabbage, pineapples, tomatoes, and carrots to the camps with the greatest need.
Napatech, a company based in Denmark, is partnering with Microboard to support food production and create sustainable futures in the area. Henrik Brill Jensen, Napatech’s COO, stated, “Food security is a fundamental human right. Helping to provide food in a sustainable program like the one The Rebuilders are running is a very effective tool to reduce conflict and initiate peace-building.”
